Volunteering and Skills
At this particular time, when finance is difficult with a global recession, it is even more important to help the work of the Trust by volunteering. We are involved in building a new locomotive for mainline use as a means of preserving some of our Engineering Heritage. As such, the locomotive has to be built by qualified labour using materials with a known specification. Therefore, we cannot use volunteer labour on the locomotive itself, although we might in future be able to use some volunteer labour in dismantling tenders but, in general, this remains our policy.
However, we are in need for volunteer help in running the work of the Trust itself. As we succeed in the building of the loco, so the workload to maintain this progress increases. We are keen to find volunteers with skills in the following areas:
Web Design, Graphic Design, Marketing, Sales, Publicity, Finance, Admin
If you have any spare time, the Trust could make use of it!!
This list is not exhaustive and there are many opportunities to use your particular talents. We have recently been successful in gaining Volunteers to act as Editor of our Newsletter and another volunteer to act as our Volunteer Co-ordinator. Remember you do NOT need to be a Member of the Trust to volunteer – it is open to everyone!
To give you some examples of tasks where we need help:
- Working on our Sales Stand
- Working in our Online Shop
- Inviting friends, contacts, colleagues to visit us at Shows
- Designing new merchandise
- Leaflet distribution
- Website maintenance

Donation of unwanted items such as railway books, including other themed transport books or artefacts, are also helpful – please get in touch if you have items you would like to donate, or bring them to one of our sales stand venues.
